Gregory "Greg" D. Southern Obituary

Greg Southern was born in Oakdale, California on January 18, 1963, to Roger and Mary Southern. He died at Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas, California on February 2, 2025. Greg is survived by his son, Matthew Southern, Mother Mary Brumley Southern, sisters Cheryl Southern Bradley and Paula Southern Auld, niece Amy Auld, and best friend Christy Almen, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Greg was preceded in death by his father, Roger Southern, and former wife Shelley Billings Southern. Greg was baptized by Pastor Rob Berhorst at Ceres Baptist Church on December 14, 2014.

Greg's death has left a void like a black hole. In life, he was vibrant, compassionate and intelligent, with an incredible, quick wit. Greg loved his son Matt more than anything and was an active, involved father. He earned a BA in Social Science from Stanislaus State with an eye toward community service.

Greg was a people person who never met a stranger and genuinely cared for individuals who crossed his path for minutes or had the privilege of knowing him for years. For most of his working life, Greg was a successful salesman with school fundraising companies, leading elementary school assemblies and even building his own cash-booth for student rewards. Greg finished his career as a personal trainer at Family-4-Fitness Center in Angels Camp, devoting his time training and mentoring many. The work Greg enjoyed most, though, was with the Howard Training Center where he helped special needs adults thrive and become gainfully employed. Recently, Greg was looking into coaching basketball for the Special Olympics.

An avid, some would say obsessive, sports fan, Greg learned to read before starting kindergarten because he wanted to read about the exploits of Willie Mays and the San Francisco Giants. Mrs. York, his fifth-grade teacher, helped Greg overcome a mental math block by writing word problems about sports statistics. Fractions and decimals were no challenge for Greg when it came to calculating batting averages or free-throw statistics.

Greg really found "his people" in the foothills during his final years. He plunged whole-heart into supporting the close-knit community and involving himself in the lives of his neighbors.

The grief suffered by Greg's loss is immeasurable.
