Leroy M Schwoerer "Lee", has at last taken his "dirt" nap.
Born in Sonora, California on March 30, 1930 to Louis and Josephine Schwoerer of
Vallecito, he was the youngest of their six children. Lee was proceeded in death by his
wife Betty, his parents, and siblings, Woodrow, Lowell, Arthur, Orville, and Jean. He is
survived by his daughter, Debbie, son, Jeff, (Pamela), five grandchildren, many great
grandchildren, nieces and nephews and extended family.
Lee died peacefully while recovering from an unexpected hip surgery, May 10, 2024
with family by his bedside. During his lifetime, Lee enjoyed playing golf, flying and
traveling, having recently taken a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Some of his favorite
pastimes included doing cross word puzzles, watching aviation related shows, reading
and playing games with great grandchildren. Having spent time in Germany as an ai
traffic controller during the Berlin Airlift, he recently celebrated his 94 th birthday with an
Oktoberfest party that included a Bavarian oompapa band, beer stein holding contests,
German themed food and many guests.
Lee loved aviation and was an avid pilot in his younger days, enjoying flying small
aircraft, such as a Cessna 172 and Beechcraft Bonanza. In retirement he loved
volunteering as a docent on the USS Midway in San Diego, as well as marshalling PGA
golf events in the area. His volunteer efforts also included assisting rebuilding efforts
after Hurricane Katrina with Habitat for Humanity. Later he volunteered his time as a
scanner in the civil air patrol, which allowed him to continue his enjoyment of flying.
Lee loved a good pun or limerick, playing golf, and space exploration. He experienced
both solo and tandem parachute jumping and even recently stated he was going to do
another jump on his 95 th birthday. He had a fulfilling career as an aerospace engineer
with Lockheed retiring after 37 years.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM at Buena Vista Cemetery in
Murphys, CA, with a Celebration of Life receptions at the Native Daughters of the
Golden West Ruby Hall, 268 Main Street in Murphys immediately after the service for
those who would like to pay their respect.
