Martin "Marty" Charles Callahan, beloved father, brother and friend passed away on
September 26, 2024 at the age of 71. Born on April 25th
, 1953, to Raymond and Lillian
Callahan at the hospital in San Andreas. He was the Grandson of Tony and Frances Tanko,
and Delia and Charles Callahan.
Marty was a lifelong resident of Calaveras County and graduate of Bret Harte High School,
class of '71. Marty had a passion for cars; never without one in the garage being restored or
modified. An accomplished deer hunter and just as notable a professional deer "scouter."
He was loved and well known in the community and was often seen driving his red truck
through Angels waving to everyone he knew.
He spent time working for both sides of the family businesses; in his Dad's store, the
Altaville Market, and the place where he eventually built a career as a well driller.
Marty spent over 50 years installing pumps and drilling holes across the tri-county area for
Tanko Well Drilling. Never without his witching stick, he enjoyed meeting customers on
their properties, choosing a new place to drill and share stories. He was often found at the
Tanko yard loading pipe, putting pump ends together, wiping down the trucks, and talking
on the phone to customers.
Coming of age in the 60's lead Marty to cultivate a love for music, forming bands and
playing guitar and piano. He continued his music aficionado becoming an avid concert
goer.
Always with his fishing pole, fishing at Melones with his family and friends off the bank or by
boat was another favorite.
There doesn't exist a road Marty has not driven down in the county, but his favorite drives
were through his hometown of Angels Camp checking in and saying hi to his family and
friends.
He is survived by Rosalee Callahan, his three daughters Rosalee Hayes (Tommy), Selena
(Cameron) and Leah Callahan, son Ryan Callahan (Kellie), sister Jennifer Eltringham
(David), niece Aimee McDonald (Drew), nephew Jeff Eltringham (Kerry), granddaughters,
Sophie Hayes, Hailey and Kasey Callahan, and great nieces and nephew Courtney, Nora,
and Paige McDonald, and Evan and Bailey Eltringham.
